Cranfield information:
On a general point, there can be some variation in ease of ink removal from different surfaces and also with different colours. Harder, non-porous surfaces, like glass, tend to be the easiest to clean up. More porous and absorbent materials like linoleum, may sometimes require a little more work. You may also find some types of soaps and detergents give better results than others so it may be worth trying a different brands. For example, we have found that Laundry detergent for washing clothes works very well with linoleum. Ultramarine is often the easiest colour to remove from all surfaces whereas Opaque White may sometimes need some more work.

For linoleum in particular, we would advise cleaning up with cold water and laundry detergent. Do not use warm or hot water with linoleum as this can leave some patches of colour that will take more effort to remove.

Recommended Clean-Up Method
First remove as much ink from your plate, tools and inked surfaces as you can. For example, you can pass your plate though a press a few times onto some newsprint until the image is weak.
Fill a small dish with a mixture of cold water and liquid soap or detergent. Dip a clean sponge into the mixture of water and detergent. Using the sponge, rub the detergent into the plate firmly and slowly using small circles to break down the ink. Wash and clean the sponge under the tap. Squeeze out the excess water and use the clean, damp sponge to wipe away the soapy mixture from the plate. Dry the surface of the plate. Repeat the cleaning process if needed.
If any patches of ink remain, use laundry liquid instead of liquid hand soap or detergent. Avoid using warm or hot water when cleaning linoleum – always use cold water.
